I took my own advice–and went after some goals. I went back to school and got my masters degree in Estate Planning. This resulted in a move from Santa Fe, back to my home town of Miami, and work in a new field. It was new, and very exciting–and I was very aware of how fortunate I was to still have the time to do that.
As indicated, this was written a while after the AIDS quilt was on display in Washington on the Mall.
This was my first Holiday poem. My former partner had died a few weeks earlier of HIV. Though we were no longer together, it really hit me hard.
Robert is one of my dearest, favorite friends–in no small measure because perhaps best of my friends, he practices the art of friendship. This was written for his 50th birthday, and structurally tracks Sweet Robert, which I wrote for his 40th.
