Sweetheart
A meditation on the surprising occasion of my telling my then partner I wanted to be his “sweetheart”.

Shortly before writing this, the law firm I headed: a) was robbed; b) moved; c) dissolved; and d) was robbed again. I was also in a new relationship, way more suddenly than I’d planned after the 7 year relationship I had been in ended the previous July. Whew!
The photograph is of the war memorial at the top of Mt. Greylock in Williamstown, MA. I hike Greylock frequently. This picture was taken shortly after the start of the Iraq War. Clearly (and sadly), there will need to be memorials built for this was too. The poem is unusual (for me) in that it’s in free verse.
Not an “occasional” poemograph–this was just for the hell of it. I don’t remember what prompted it, but I clearly was (am) frustrated with the glacial pace of positive change.
My nephew got married. Probably more traumatic for me than him–how could I have a nephew old enough to get married????
