Holiday 1995

A theme of love here–the pain of loss, the joy of a doggy friend, and the sweetness of new romance.

Love hurts, love heals. Love teaches through
the people who people a life
that is lived.  She sometimes needs two,
some times more, some less.  Sometimes strife,
sometimes bliss, or an unforeseen
deed;  some sweet words, or some places,
a sloppy wet kiss, forest green
groves–these and more are love’s faces.

I’m blessed to be able to live
in the warmth of my good friends and
family.  They seem able to give
what I need, and too, understand
the lessons this year has taught me,
lessons of love.  Three I note here-
to be sure, there were more, but three
made the rest of them crystal clear.

Love hurts.  A final good bye to
dear friends–two more too young to be
gone for good–both bosom friends who
knew me too well.  Sometimes I’ll see
or I’ll hear each one of them still,
so when thoughts of their death kick in,
it hurts fresh all over.  And will,
I think, ’til I’m with them again.

Love heals.  Pink tongue, white coat, black spots,
and hell bent to play.  She’s four legs
of love, and now she calls the shots.
Let me love you, she all but begs.
Who am I to resist, for true
though it is I have much of this
stuff in my life, there are none who
ever o.d. on this bliss.

Last, love has cooked me a sweet meal
indeed–the fresh taste of my words.
Some years back, I’m loathe to reveal,
I announced love was for the birds
(it’s movie time romance that I’m talking of here).  Well Hollywood,
howdy!  Though it may take some time,
bet that love delivers the goods.

I’m staying enrolled in this school
of sweet knocks for the coming year.
(Say what you will, I’m no one’s fool!)
My wish for all, this time of cheer
is to be open, when without warning,
love appears with her boon.
Greet the girl warmly, have no doubt,
she’ll make you feel you’d hung the moon.
