Sweet Robert Redux

Robert is one of my dearest, favorite friends–in no small measure because perhaps best of my friends, he practices the art of friendship. This was written for his 50th birthday, and structurally tracks Sweet Robert, which I wrote for his 40th.

Once again you’ve brought us here
to where it seems we all come from.
With love compounded through the years
of interest paid-(you’re prime, then some)!
Not a chance we would choose to spend
this milestone time elsewhere,  to roam
this day away from bestest friend.

So we’ll assemble where you say
and when and how to celebrate
all 50 now.   A golden day!
To touch your spirit on that date,
to feel the joy.  Cause truth be told
youth isn’t wasted on the young
at all;  it is us growing old.

We’ve many tales left still to tell
now each of us has found his voice.
Trial and error has taught us well
that dreams come true through practiced choice.

So thanks for Tom to my Huck Finn
and wizard to my Dorothy.
It’s only now that we begin
to write with much authority.

BobbyBuddySpiritKin,
there’s no such thing as early/late.
There’s only ever now we’re in.
Now: a new chance to create.

Take each moment and make it glow
with life and love, and vision clear.
The only time we have is now,
the only place there is is here.

Our stories ever intertwine.
We make it up and God transcribes.
Yours is a vital role in mine;
it will be so throughout our lives.
